Advent
Seeing as our strengths are our weaknesses, and so on, here is a reflection on something I don’t know much about. Being a born and bred, independent, Restoration-movement, Christian churchite, I don’t know much about the church calendar traditions of other denominations. I was doing reading in a book called “Alternative Worship” (Baker and Gay, 2003) which contains some cool worship ideas based on the Anglican Church calendar (B & G are British). Apparently, we are in the season of Advent, that is, the few weeks before Christmas. I always thought Advent was just a collection of rituals meant to be done at Christmas. In actuality, the seasons of the church calendar are meant to represent seasons of faith. Advent is a season which represents a time of expectation, hope and waiting as we prepare for God’s breaking into our world (in the person of the baby Jesus) and into our lives in new and unexpected ways. What a neat idea, to not only celebrate the event of Jesus’ birth, but the sort of faith experience that it mirrors. Who among us has not waited before God with questions, hope, and anxiety, wondering what his next move will be, waiting to see how he will act on our behalf. May this be a season of God’s breaking into our lives in new and unexpected ways.
