My name is MRI, (“Hi MRI!”), and I have a problem.

I’m ready to call it an addiction. I can’t help myself. It’s taking over my life, and I like it. I went into a bookstore (I know, I know, everybody at Lit Anon says I shouldn’t…) just to buy something for someone else. I swear! It wasn’t for me! I was there to buy Christmas presents! And I did. I did. But that’s not all. After picking out my gifts, I wandered around the store for an hour, flipping through books on collecting antiques, growing herbs, and listening to my inner child. I didn’t pick up a Dr. Phil book-for goodness sake, I haven’t completely lost it!! (just kidding to all his fans). But I did buy two G.K. Chesterton short novels and another book by the neurologist Oliver Sacks. I couldn’t help myself! What if I forgot I wanted to read them, or if I came back and they didn’t have them?!?! Scary part is, I didn’t even need them. I already have 5 books at home I’m trying to read all at once right now. Vanity Fair has taken about 3 months to get through. The Chronicles of Narnia (or ‘the chron’ as we addicts call it) is flying by. Frankenstein is waiting in the wings. Not to mention the various types of psych and theology reading I’m doing. When will it end? Probably as soon as I read all the books there are in the world. Then it will end. Or I’ll have to resort to reading non-literature like “The Gospel according to Oprah” (no kidding-actual title). Until then, I’m gonna read like there’s no tomorrow, and you can try and stop me.

So Merry Christmas Eve Eve to all you fellow addicts. If you’ve considered taking up this addiction, I would heartily encourage you. If you’re already addicted, I’d love to hear what you’re reading…after all, I might need to go to the bookstore again today………

I’m in the middle of Memoirs of a Geisha. Incredible! I can’t get over the fact that it was written by a guy. Add it to the qeue if you haven’t read it already. I can relate through my military training to some of Chiyo’s experiences…. such an intense experience. Good stuff. Really draws you in and makes you a fan of this young girl (written by a guy!).

Ah! I have heard interesting things about the novel, particularly in light of the gender of its author. I shall have to read in order to see if the criticism is true–and also because I can’t see things in the theater before reading them, and the movie looks good. The queue has been formed…
