Won’t you be my Niebuhr?

First, two entries off my Mr. Rogers calendar:

“If I’m sad about something and I dismiss my sadness by saying, “Oh well, it was for the best,” than I’m probably not willing or able to explore how I’m feeling…On the other hand, if we can allow ourselves to be gentle with ourselves no matter what our feelings may be, we have the chance of discovering the very deep roots of who we are.”

“It’s worth the struggle to discover who you really are and how you, in your own way, can put life together as something that means a lot to you. It’s a miracle when you finally discover whom you’re best equipped to serve–and we’re all equipped to serve in some way.”

Second, I’m doing some reading called Christ and Culture by H. Richard Niebuhr–that’s pronounced ‘nee-burr.’ Every time I say his name, I hear Melissa Luckey calling across the street, “Hey Naaeey-burrrrr!” Too bad Niebuhr isn’t her neighbor. That would’ve been fun.
