And in other news, research suggests you’re probably not always perfect

The professor (also the President of the Seminary) left his phone on in class yesterday. Usually, when a student’s phone rings in class, one person (the student) gets embarrassed and the other students (in this case about 300 of them) look disapprovingly in his or her direction. But when the prof’s phone rings, 300 students immediately get the stifled giggles while he tries to figure out why no one’s shutting off their stinking phone oh wait it’s his phone and then he smiles and everyone laughs out loud at him. It happens in a stream like that, and its so great to watch unfold.

I love it when people who are supposed to be perfect (not that we actually think that, but in some deeper way we assume that) make mistakes–parents, professors, therapists, pastors. All of us are in a position of authority to someone, and that someone loves to see the person in charge make a mistake AND be able to laugh about it.

So if you haven’t already developed a sense of humor about your foibles, get one. Your kids/employees/students/clients/adoring fans will thank you for it.

When I do something stupid in class, like knock over a table with a broken leg and my papers and laptop going flying off and crash on the floor, if I can laugh at myself it feels more like the kids are laughing with me instead of at me. :)
