Friday Mélange

I still haven’t ‘resized’ the below pictures, as requested by the blarg, primarily because I have no idea how to do so. I’m actually just waiting for them to resize themselves.

We put a new floor in our bathroom. It only took 14 hours. Not just the floor. Moving the toilet, putting in molding, repainting everything, etc. Now our 4×5 ft. bathroom is the nicest room in the house. We’ve decided to begin doing our entertaining there.

I’ve decided everyone should have the lyrics to at least one Bob Dylan song memorized. I’m trying to decide between Subterranean Homesick Blues and The Times They are A-Changin’.

Well, it’s Friday, and as Tom Petty would say, I need a big weekend. I think I’ll get a pint at the Golden Spoon today.

Finally, in the long-neglected realm of theology, thoughts on the connection between joy and sorrow (taken from lectures by Dr. Bradley in a class on Christian Spirituality). On the night of his greatest sorrow, the Lord gives his disciples his peace, acting to comfort them despite experiencing deep suffering himself (John 14:27). And perhaps the two–peace and suffering, joy and sorrow–are not unrelated. Perhaps it is out of Jesus’ sorrow, his deep sense of compassion for us, that his genuine desire for our peace springs. Likewise, believers are called to joy, but we are daily grieved whenever we see the ways sin is at work. Are we called to forget this sorrow, to ‘overcome’ in a spirit of truimphalism? I think not. I’d advocate for an acknowledgement of sorrow, that it might teach us something of Christ’s great sorrow and allow us to begin truly mourning with those who mourn, and to learn a true sense of Christ-like compassion, both for ourselves and others. I find mourning more difficult than being exhortatory or judgmental, but its not supposed to be easy.

Here’s a cool site with a list of all Dylan’s songs, plus links to the lyrics. I especially like the melody of Restless Farewell, as well as a good portion of its lyrics. http://www.bobdylan.com/songs/restless.html
