Lessons on the Animal Kingdom and the food/fear chain.

Paul fed one of our neighborhood cats a piece of marlin the other day. Now it (the cat, not the marlin) is hanging out on our front steps, looking hungry. I surprised it on my way out yesterday, and it hurried downstairs, out of my way. It didn’t get very far before being accosted by an aggressive and rather territorial hummingbird, who started dive-bombing it. The cat, unaware that she was meant to be alarmed by this behavior, settled into attack mode, and then got bored and settled in for a nap, which I imagine must have annoyed the bird. Eventually they both saw me and were frightened off. So in case you’re keeping track, hummingbirds fear cats, and both fear me. Muahahaha.

Your ‘daily-doings’ observations remind me of what I saw the other day while taking my morning walk. Hmmm. I might have already told you about this. My 2 mile round trip, up and back Birchdale/Patton, if taken at the right (wrong?) time, crosses my path with elementary, middle and high schoolers. It was last week…Monday, I think. So… the 2nd week of school, the first Monday morning. What I observed were almost NO smiling faces. The exception was a little grade-school girl, holding her mother’s hand, happily walking and chatting, with a big grin. The saddest were the really little ones walking all by themselves. Middle schoolers in pairs we less glum, but not smiling or animated. One mom, wearing PJs (with sheep or something on them), parked her car accross the street from Sussman Middle School and got out to watch her daughter cross the street. Boy, that would have never flown with me when I was in Jr. High! But hey, the girl didn’t seem perturbed by it. Maybe knowing someone really wanted her to be safe (enough to get out of the car in PJ’s) outweighed potential embarassment. Or maybe she is a very rare breed of middle schooler who doesn’t give a rip what anyone else thinks. OR… maybe she was still half a sleep and was totally unaware of her circumstances. Anyway, observation is entertaining.
