There's a separate quickfind toolbar that is enabled by typing an apostrophe or forward slash when a form field does not have focus (one searches links only or something). The only way to disable it is using an extension or simply going into about:config. By contrast, the "Search for text" option allows you to start a search using any key when a form field does not have focus. For your quickfind woes in Firefox, put about:config into the address bar find accessibility.typeaheadfind.autostart, should be near the top, double click it to set it to false.
